GRAVEL-BED RIVERS IN NORTHERN ITALY
Leaders: Nicola Surian (University of Padova, Italy), Walter Bertoldi (University of Trento, Italy)
Description: a wide range of gravel-bed rivers, from steep mountain streams to large braided rivers, do occur in the eastern sector of the Italian Alps. The main topics that will be addressed during the field trip are: (i) sediment transport and connectivity; (ii) morphodynamics in braided rivers; (iii) river response to extreme floods; (iv) anthropogenic disturbance of river processes and evolutionary trajectory; (v) river management. The field trip will start along the Tagliamento River, a large braided river that represents a reference system in the Alps to observe and understand natural, or semi-natural, forms and processes, and it will end in the Dolomites, examining deposits and geomorphic effects of a large flood (Vaia Storm – October 2018).
Logistics/recommendations: The weather is likely to be hot, but precipitation cannot be ruled out. We suggest bringing sunscreen, a wide hat, a rainproof jacket, and appropriate shoes for short walking along the rivers. The trip will start from and will end up in Riva del Garda.
